My Early Years

I was born in 1953 at Pecos,Texas, the son of ranch hand Jack Humphries and his wife Barbara (Skidmore), and first lived on the VH Ranch just North of Balmorhea, Texas. My brothers Robin and Larry followed at more or less two year intervals, and then Leon came along in 1973 when I was twenty. Life wasn't easy, but there were plenty of good times, and we learned values many children just don't get exposed to anymore.

I went to school from 1st grade on at Balmorhea I.S.D. and played in the Band and on the golf team while I was in High School. I graduated from Balmorea High in 1972.

Teaching School

I graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas in May 1977 and began my first teaching job that summer in Comstock, Texas, not far from Del Rio. It was an extremely small school, and in addition to being the Band Director (my original goal), I ended up teaching 8th grade History, Science and Health, 7th grade Language Arts, and a combined High School Spanish I/II class.

After teaching in Comstock for 2 years, I went on to work in law enforcement for three years in Pecos as a State Police Dispatcher for the Texas Department of Public Safety, then returned to teaching in 1982 in Balmorhea, my hometown. In Balmorhea I taught Band, Elementary Music, Computer Science, Computer Literacy, Business Data Processing, and Orchestra until 1988. After my experiences as a deputy sheriff, I taught High School Spanish in Van Horn, Texas from 1990 to 1996 and Band in 1994-95. After serving as Culberson County Sheriff, I returned to Van Horn High School where I teach Computer Science, Webmastering, and serve as the school district computer network administrator and webmaster.

A life of music

I was exposed to music from birth; my father, Jack, was always singing and playing guitar, both around the house and at public dances around town. My grandmother, Bennie, played piano, and almost every family that stopped in to visit had at least one member who played some instrument. Almost every visit became an occasion for a "musical." People would come from miles around to hear the music, dance a little, and visit a lot.

Being around so much music and around so many people who appreciated music made me want to lean how to play. My grandmother began teaching me to play piano "by ear," and I began to learn guitar and bass guitar on my own by watching my dad and others while I chorded on the piano.

Years later, while in college, I played in a small county band (Rio Bravo Band) and over the years continued playing in dance bands. Currently, my brother and I play with Kennith Thetford and Charlie Sansom in Mixed Company Country Band.

Deputy Sheriff

My experiences after the tornado hit Saragoza, Texas on May 22, 1987, helped me decide to go back into law enforcement, this time as a peace officer. I went to the Sul Ross Law Enforcement Academy in Alpine, Texas during the summer of 1988 and graduated the first week of August with two of the three top awards in my class (Marksman and Best Notebook).

On August 4th, 1988, I was hired by the Culberson CountySheriff's Department in Van Horn, Texas as a Deputy Sheriff, where I served until February 1990.

Sheriff of Culberson County

In March of 1996, I won the Primary Election for Sheriff of Culberson County, Texas, beating Plácido "Chano" Núñez by 151 votes on a platform concentrating on the need to fight illegal drugs in Culberson County. Within two months it was clear that Mr. Núñez's second cousin and Chief Deputy, Oscar Carrillo, intended to run as a write-in candidate for Sheriff in the 1996 General Election. After the second campaign I beat him by 250 votes that November.

The Family

In 1990 I married Rosie Pérez of Van Horn, Texas. I already had two daughters, Kristi Marie and Natalie Jane, and Rosie already had two sons, Enrique (Henry or Kiki) and Rodolfo (Rudy). In 1991 our youngest daughter, Lucinda Banay, came along; sort of like a "Brady Bunch" family. ((pictures later))
